Refuting Ray Comfort
- Banana argument: Comfort said that the banana has many human-friendly features so God must have made it for them. In reality, humans engineered the banana so it fits in their hand and peels easily. Same with oranges. Ray has went on to say that God gave humans the power to engineer bananas, but that's just a belief with no logical justification - our abilities fit easily with evolution.
- Blind dog argument: Comfort once said that "There is a big bang, life forms, and after millions of years a dog evolves. It is the first dog. He has got legs, tail, teeth, eyes—and it's good he has eyes because he has to look for a female, he has been blind for millions of years but now he can see. He has got to find a female. She has got to be evolved at the right place at the right time with all the reproductive organs and a desire to mate. Because without a female, he is a dead dog." Ray Comfort fails to realise that evolution happens during reproduction, not during any person's life. In addition, there is no first dog. There are dogs, and there were a number of doglike animals which could be bred to become like dogs. He later argued, on the same point, that it is a mystery why we have two sexes. The answer is that under evolution, all animals have a common ancestor. A close relative to that ancestor may have developed bisexuality and, through survival of the fittest, it became a purebred trait.
- Another quote: "As blood began to evolve, it couldn't get around the body, so he evolved a heart to pump it around. The heart would take a long time to evolve, and it also needed a complex system of blood vessels to evolve. So survival was impossible for the first pre-human primitive life form. But that doesn’t matter to an atheist. It just happened. Evolution-did-it." Actually, many animals live without blood or have blood with no heart and instead muscles to assist in blood flow. As species evolved, larger bodies became an advantage(thats how we got from lemurlike animals to humans) and with it the existence of a single mechanism to aid blood flow, the heart. Comfort has used the same resoning on gills vs. lungs. In reality, gills gradually gained the ability to respirate on land, then having gills became a vestigial part that mutated away.
- Fishapods and crockoducks: There are tons of transitional fossils in the fossil record, even if it isn't crockoducks
- "I can't observe it, it's millions of years ago" While millions of years ago cannot be observed directly, there is paleontological evidence of dinosaurs, numerous transitional species, trilobites, and ammonites, which are shown to be millions of years old through radiometric dating.
- "Change in kinds" argument: Ray Comfort tried to get the point across that there's no evidence for a change in kinds. The clear question is - what is a kind? Apart from "species," NO DEFINITIONS OF THIS ARE OBJECTIVE. We have seen new fly species come about by mutation in a lab, so yes, we have seen a change in kind.
